Helena, Montana
May 24th 1880
Mr. Jno Redmond

Sir I write to you for the purpose of giving you my opinion of this country so far as I have to inform myself in so short a time. Helena is situated at the foot of the Mountain at the mouth of a Gulch or Ravine which has all been workt from
its head to its Mouth in width from fifty feet to 300 yards called
gulch digging. The earth that
was dug and washt in some
places was 50 feet in none
less than five feet from which millions of dollars have
been taken In many
places they are working it over again and it is paying very well. In fact there is more or less gold mixt in the ground all over this part of the country but not in paying quantities. It seems to me that the people here are not content to make money slow. They are used to a big pile or nothing.
