Hamilton stayed in Montana until 1902. He visited his grandchildren about once a year until he died June 17, 1919. His great-grandson Russell Schutz writes, "Grand Dad liked a little nip once in awhile...We were up to Grandma Redmonds one time I think it was Christmas. Someone had got him a bottle. After his nap he got a cup, put some sugar and a bit of snort, some hot water came to the table got some mashed potatoes he thought was butter then in a bit said Jessie how come this butter won't melt. Then he saw what he had done and everyone had a big laugh."
He also told Russ about killing 18 grizzly bears one winter.
Mary Helen Guymon was born in Catlin on September 19, 1833 to Noah and Lury Guymon.
The family has no photos of Mary Helen. She lived only about 10 more years after Hamilton left her, dying at the age of 57 years.
